Q. What do hackers want?
A. Hackers want three main things:
- Your money
- Data they can sell (credit card and identities)
- Your computer resources (disc space to host data on, to use your system to attack other systems, host spam engines, etc.)
Q. We're a small business, Why would a hacker attack us instead of a bigger company?
A. Mostly because it's easier - you don't have the security that larger enterprises do.
- In many cases, they actually target small businesses more for their computer resources than for data they can sell.
Q. We have tape backup: Is that good enough?
A. Not for most businesses. In fact, most tape systems have faults, much like a VHS tape. Every time you record over your tape the quality degrades. Also the recovering from tape takes a very long time, three days at best in most cases, meaning your business will not be able to operate for days after a data loss
Q. How secure is off-site data storage?
A. In most cases data is transmitted over a secure Internet tunnel to the destination and most facilities take extreme security measures to protect those data warehouse servers.
